What Is Collagen — and Why It Matters For Your Skin’s Foundation
In the world of skincare, collagen isn’t just a trend. It’s the structural protein that determines your skin’s resilience, bounce, and long-term health.

Collagen is one of the most important proteins for healthy skin. Yet it’s also one of the more misunderstood ingredients in skincare. While it’s often marketed as a miracle topical solution, the science behind it is far more nuanced.
What Is Collagen?
Dermatology research suggests collagen production decreases by approximately 1% per year after the age of 25. Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body, forming the framework that supports tissues such as skin, bones, and muscles.

Within the skin, collagen is primarily found in the dermis layer. Approximately 70–80% of the dermis consists of collagen, which acts as the skin’s internal scaffolding.
Why Collagen Matters for Skin
Collagen fibers provide structural support that helps the skin maintain its shape. It works in tandem with Elastin to create the “snap-back” quality of young skin.
Figure 2: Collagen provides firmness and structure, while Elastin allows the skin to stretch and bounce back.
- 1. Skin Firmness: When collagen levels are strong, skin appears smoother and more elastic.
- 2. Skin Thickness: Collagen contributes to the density and strength of the skin.
- 3. Wrinkle Prevention: As the structure weakens, surface lines gradually deepen.
Why Collagen Declines With Age
The decline starts earlier than most expect. While genetics play a role, external factors like UV exposure significantly accelerate this degradation.

⚠️ External “Collagen Killers”
- UV Exposure: The largest cause of damage.
- Glycation: High sugar intake binds to collagen.
- Pollution: Increases oxidative stress.
